Internet in a Box builds small, low-cost servers that deliver Wikipedia, educational videos, health resources and other content without needing an internet connection. The project started as a way to help schools and libraries in places where connectivity is spotty or too expensive. Teams put together Raspberry Pi hardware loaded with carefully selected open content and simple menus so teachers and students can browse everything locally. Over the years the software has been refined to run on various devices and to make updates easier when a connection is occasionally available. Schools in rural Africa, parts of Asia and remote areas of the Americas have used the kits to give thousands of learners access to material they otherwise could not reach. The content packages are chosen with local partners so they match language needs and curriculum priorities rather than offering one-size-fits-all collections.
