# Mark Nichols: Architect of the Modern Internet, 1996 ## About Mark Nichols started Digital Island in 1996 to solve a simple problem: websites were still painfully slow outside the US. The company placed servers in key cities around the globe so retailers could deliver pages and transactions without the usual lag. Forty-three major carriers eventually signed on, which gave Digital Island direct routes into markets that had been hard to reach. That network became the quiet engine behind early international eCommerce for several Fortune 500 brands. Instead of selling just bandwidth, the team focused on performance and reliability that retailers could count on during peak seasons. Over time the platform added security layers and traffic management tools that kept sites up when traffic spiked. The approach proved so effective that larger players took notice. In 2001 Cable & Wireless bought the business to fold the infrastructure into its own global backbone. Nichols stayed involved in the space afterward, documenting how those early decisions shaped today's internet. The original vision still shows up in how modern CDNs and edge networks operate.
